The Newly Redesigned BMW X6
The BMW X6 offered a distinct approach to luxury vehicle design when its first generation trim was introduced in 2008. With its stocky build and turbo-charged engine, this Sports Activity Coupe® (SAC) is proof that BMW can compete on multiple sports-centric fronts in the market, without having to compromise its luxury vehicle appeal.
It’s a new model year, however, and BMW went back to the drawing board to help deliver new updates, creating the next-generation X6. Those who fell in love with the first- and second-generation BMW X6 models will find the 2020 BMW X6 has an array of new upgrades, trim designs and features that may make you strongly consider making this your next BMW vehicle purchase.
What’s new in the 2020 BMW X6? The first thing you’ll notice with the third-generation 2020 X6 is the distinct and more aggressive bodywork. Additionally, you’ll find must-see updates made to the interior of this luxury crossover vehicle. While some of the updates to the 2020 X6 are unique to the vehicle, BMW also borrows some features that buyers loved in other models, including the X5 SAV®.
There’s more to love in the 2020 X6 than you’ve seen in previous generations of this exclusive vehicle. Visit our car dealership in Columbia to learn more about the heavily-updated 2020 BMW X6, or to schedule a showing and a test drive.
Exterior Features
BMW retained some of the more desirable body designs it introduced with the first-generation X6 and maintained into the second generation. The fastback roofline makes a return in the 2020 model year, for example, making the rear sightlines as clean and aerodynamic as they have been since 2008.
However, almost everything else with the exterior designed has been upsized. The entire vehicle is an inch longer than the second-generation 2019 model. BMW also updated the front hood to reveal more refined lines versus the curvier approach of the previous two BMW X6 models.
Additionally, you’ll find updated tires, as well. Whereas the 2019 model featured 19-inch wheels, the 2020 BMW X6 M offers 21-inch M double-spoke bi-color wheels.
Some of the best exterior features make a return for the 2020 model. That includes the heated power-folding mirrors, Shadowline exterior trim and the M quad tailpipes.
The 2020 BMW X6 is offered with an array of colors, with a heavy emphasis on the darker end of the color spectrum. There are 10 color options available, with a focus on blue, gray and red metallics. For those who want to stand out even more, BMW also offers the X6 in a snowy Alpine White.
And as far as colors go, the 2020 BMW X6 not only introduces a more angular front grille but includes a new illumination feature to the grille that can be turned on and off at will.
A Balance of Performance and Power
Power comes first with the 2020 BMW X6 M50i thanks to its 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8. Delivering an immense amount of force on the road, this turbocharged engine delivers 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. At that range, the BMW X6 provides one of the strongest engines on the market.
The strength of the engine means a bit of sacrifice on fuel efficiency, but not overwhelmingly so. The 2020 X6 M50i effectively delivers an EPA-estimated 22 MPG highway.
Those who need an improved level of fuel efficiency can find it with other models of the 2020 BMW X6. A great balance of power output and fuel efficiency is available thanks to the 335-horsepower 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine you’ll find in the sDRIVE40i and xDRIVE40i trim levels. These models sip fuel with an EPA-estimated 26 MPG highway.
Regardless of your trim level, you’ll find full control of your 2020 BMW X6 thanks to its DriveLogic transmission. Shift easily between Sport and Manual, and shift quickly with the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
An Enviable Safety Record
The 2020 BMW X6 offers an extensive suite of safety features. Each vehicle is equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), three-point safety belts, driver- and passenger-side airbags, a front and rear Head Protection System, LATCH system for child seats and other standard safety options.
However, BMW also takes a fully modern approach to safety by including a 360-degree array of sensors that help monitor every side of your vehicle. These sensors help deliver critical safety measures, to include:
- Active Driving Assist with Frontal Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning
- Active Blind Spot Detection
- BMW’s Active Protection, which detects potential accidents and automatically prepares the driver and passengers by tightening safety belts, closing windows and activating post-crash braking.
The 2020 X6 provides an extensive list of safety features buyers can explore.

Esteemed Interior Design and Technology
While the exterior of the 2020 BMW X6 is eye-catching, the interior trims and technology offer a high-class feel. Inside, you’ll find black leather seating, a leather dashboard, an Anthracite Alcantara® headliner and Carbon Fiber interior trim. But perhaps the most attention-grabbing feature is the dashboard instrumentation and infotainment system.
Fully compatible with Bluetooth® and Apple CarPlay®, you can connect your mobile device and direct the harman/kardon® surround sound audio system to deliver your favorite music as you navigate to your next location.
Control every aspect of your vehicle with the touch of a button. That includes opening or closing the all-new two-piece glass panel panoramic roof or adjusting the 18-way power seats.
Other must-see luxury features include rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated front armrests and steering wheel, three-stage heated front seats and a heavily modernized cockpit and digital instrument cluster.
